Open Pit Mining Drilling: Equipment Selection and Optimization

Open pit mining requires large-scale, high-productivity drilling for blast hole preparation. Equipment selection and operational optimization are critical for achieving target production rates at minimum cost.

Blast Hole Drill Rigs

Large rotary blast hole drill rigs are the workhorses of open pit mining. They drill holes typically 150-450mm in diameter to depths of 15-30 meters. Top-hammer drills are used for smaller diameter holes in harder rock.

Top-Hammer vs DTH

Top-hammer drilling is preferred for holes up to 127mm diameter in hard rock. DTH (down-the-hole) drilling is more efficient for larger diameters and softer rock formations where hole deviation is a concern.

Penetration Rate Factors

Key factors affecting penetration rate include: rock hardness and abrasivity, bit type and condition, drill rig power, feed force, rotation speed, and flushing efficiency. Optimizing all these factors simultaneously maximizes productivity.

Bit Life Optimization

Bit life is a major cost driver in open pit drilling. Proper bit selection, correct operating parameters, and timely bit changes all contribute to minimizing cost per meter drilled.

Fleet Management

Effective fleet management ensures maximum drill availability. Implement a preventive maintenance program, maintain adequate spare parts inventory, and track key performance indicators for each drill.
